RIO GRANDE, P.R. -- Junior Dan Doyle (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) continued his strong start to the spring season by shooting another under-par round on Monday at the Puerto Rico Classic. Doyle carded a 1-under 71 and is now 3-under (70-71=141) for the tournament with one round to play. He is in 16th place overall, five strokes behind the leader, Georgia's Brendon Todd.
As a team, the 25th-ranked Wildcats fell a spot to 13th in the 18-team field. Northwestern (289-296=585) is a stroke behind Kent State. Georgia fired a second-round best 277 to take command of the team lead. The Bulldogs own a 7-stroke advantage over East Tennessee State, the first-round leader.
Doyle was the only Wildcat to break par on Monday. Senior Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) posted a 2-over 74 (78-74=152) and is now 71st overall. NU's other senior, David Merkow (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead Union) carded a 4-over 76 and is now 35th overall at 1-over (69-76=145).
Freshman Jonathan Bowers (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) was 3-over for the second round and is 48th overall at 3-over (72-75=147). Junior Kyle Moore (Dublin, Ohio/Scioto) bounced back a bit from his sub-par first round and is now in 84th place at 14-over (82-76=158).
The third and final round begins at 6 a.m. CT on Tuesday.
This year's Puerto Rico Classic includes the nation's top five teams and 10 top-25 squads overall.
