Schwartz and Goebbert Named Big Ten Pitcher and Player of the Week

Feb. 14, 2007

EVANSTON, Ill. - Senior pitcher Dan Schwartz (New York, N.Y./Northern Valley Regional) and freshman first baseman Jake Goebbert (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) were named Big Ten Pitcher and Player of the Week by the conference office today.

Goebbert batted .500 (7-for-14) at the Red Raider Classic in Lubbock, Texas over the weekend. He drove in two RBI and scored three runs over the course of three games. In his first collegiate contest--Feb. 9 against Texas Tech--the freshman recorded a pair of RBI and a double. He singled in his first career at-bat. The Hampshire, Illinois native had at least two hits and one run scored in all three of the Wildcats' games. This is Goebbert's first career award and the first for a Northwestern freshman since Feb. 15, 2005 (Max Mann).

Northwestern's last Big Ten Player of the Week was Pat McMahon on April 18, 2006.

Schwartz led off Northwestern's season with six innings of no-hit baseball against Texas Tech on Feb. 9. The left-hander allowed just two earned runs off three hits and fanned three batters. He recorded the Wildcats' lone win of the weekend in the 12-7 victory. This is Schwartz' second career award as he also was honored on Feb. 14, 2006.

Northwestern last Big Ten Pitcher of the Week was Dan Brauer on May 16, 2006.

NU is next in action when they travel to Beaumont, Texas, to play three games against Lamar, Arkansas State and Creighton. The first of three games is to be played against host Lamar at 6:35 p.m. Friday, February 23.
