EVANSTON, Ill. -- Senior Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) has been named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week after his performance in NU's sweep of a double-dual against No. 12 Michigan and No. 13 Ohio State over the weekend.
The honor is Grevers' fourth of the season and the 10th of his career, tying him with Michigan's Peter Vanderkaay for the most season and career honors in conference history. Vanderkaay earned four during the 2003-04 season and 10 during his career that spanned 2002-03 to 2005-06.
The accolade is Northwestern's eighth of the year, extending its own Big Ten record.
Grevers ended his Northwestern dual-meet career in style over the weekend, notching three NCAA 'A' efforts and setting four pool records at Ohio State's McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion to help NU finish the dual-meet season a perfect 8-0 after wins over No. 12 Michigan and No. 13 Ohio State in a double-dual over the weekend.
The win over Michigan snapped the Wolverines 39-meet conference winning streak dating back to 1999 and was NU's first win against UM in the schools' last 33 meetings dating back to the 1928-29 season.
Grevers led off the 400 medley relay with an NCAA 'A' 100 back split of 47.42 to help NU to a pool-record 3:12.03 (B cut). He also swam on the pool-record setting 200 free relay (1:19.71 'B' cut). He set pool records in both backstroke events with NCAA 'A' cuts, swimming a 1:43.07 in the 200 and a 47.14 in the 100. He also won the 200 IM with a 'B' cut of 1:46.79 and swam on the winning 200 medley relay which had a 'B' time of 1:27.86.
