EVANSTON, Ill. -- Mike Alexandrov (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) was named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week following his selection as Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet at the Dallas Morning News Swimming & Diving Classic over the weekend.
He posted three NCAA "A" cut times, including a 53.01 performance in the 100-yard breaststroke, which currently is the best time in the nation in the event. Overall, the senior won four individual events and set six meet and pool records. Northwestern won the meet, defeating No. 3 California, No. 10 Florida State and host Southern Methodist University.
This is Alexandrov's sixth career award -- second of the season -- and Northwestern's sixth of the year.
The six honors from the conference office tie Northwestern's own team record for most in a season, set last year. In addition to Alexandrov, Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) also has won twice, while junior Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) and sophomore Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston) each have won once.
NU captured four-consecutive Big Ten Swimmer of the Week nods from October 31 to November 21.
