EVANSTON, Ill. -- For the fifth time in his career -- and the second time this season -- senior Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) has been named the CollegeSwimming.com National Swimmer of the Week after Northwestern's dominating performance at the Dallas Morning News Swimming and Diving Classic over the weekend.
The Wildcats broke 10 meet and pool records to score 359 points and defeat No. 3 California (334), host Southern Methodist University (305) and No. 10 Florida State (131). Every event Grevers swam set meet and pool records.
His best performance was a meet, pool and Northwestern school record with an 'A' time to win the 200 freestyle (1:34.21). He set a meet and pool record with an NCAA 'A' time to win the 100 backstroke (46.86), and earned another meet and pool record with an NCAA 'A' time to win the 200 backstroke (1:41.55).
Grevers also swam on three meet- and pool-record setting relays: He helped the 'Cats to a winning 'A' time in the 200 freestyle relay (1:19.74, lead-off split: 19.82) and in the 400 medley relay (3:10.87). He also swam the leadoff leg in the 200 medley relay, with his 22.25 helping NU to a meet and pool record NCAA 'B' time of 1:26.97.
Grevers previously won the national award this season on Nov. 21 after being named Swimmer of the Meet at NU's TYR Invitational. He is the second Wildcat to win the award in as many weeks after women's swimmer Kassia Shishkoff (Raleigh, N.C./St. David's School) earned it on January 9.
In its second week of existence, the Swimming World Magazine Collegiate Swimmer of the Week honor found its way to Evanston for the second-straight time. Grevers also picked up that award after Shishkoff earned the inaugural accolade last week.
