EVANSTON, Ill. -- Defensive end Corey Wootton (Rutherford, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) picked up another postseason honor Monday night, earning first-team Freshman All-American honors from the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).
Wootton, who previously was named an honorable mention All-Big Ten recipient (media), led all defensive linemen in tackles and was the team leader in TFLs (9) and sacks (4.5). He also had a pair of interceptions, which ranks as the second-most by a Wildcat player this year. He was the first Northwestern player since Hudhaifa Ismaeli in 1995 to accomplish every defensive statistic at least once this year: tackles (51), TFLs (9), sacks (4.5), interceptions (2), deflections (1), QB hurries (1), fumble recoveries (1), forced fumbles (1) and blocked kicks (1).
Wootton also was named to The Sporting News' All-Big Ten Freshman team in December.
