Sam Nemecek and Christa French Top Finishers at Penn State Open

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Sophomore Sam Nemecek and freshman Christa French were Northwestern's top finishers this weekend at the Garret Penn State Open in State College, Pa. Both finished fifth in the foil and epée divisions respectively.

In the foil division, senior Jessica Florendo finished 11th, while junior Natalie Wang finished 16th. Freshman Meredith Baskies placed 30th and Ameesha Sampat 50th.

In epée, Kayley French finished three spots behind her sister in eighth, while fellow freshman Joanna Niklinska placed 30th. Sophomore Megan Ross placed 34th, senior Sara Pechererk 35th and Sarah Henning 36th. Senior Sarah Gravlee rounded out the Wildcat contingent with a 42nd place showing.

In sabre, junior Gina Annunziato led NU with an 18th-place finish, while senior Mai Vu finished 19th. Freshman Whitney White placed 24th, senior Sophie Eustis 25th, freshman Allie Keller 27th and Alice Weinert 52nd.

"We had a solid showing in every weapon," said head coach Laurie Schiller. "This is a very tough meet with most of the best collegiate fencers present, so it is a good look at where we are right now in our season."

Northwestern is back in action next weekend at the Junior North American Cup in Albuquerque, N.M.
