Two Wildcats Earn Finals Swims at Day One of U.S. Open

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Four Northwestern student-athletes competed at the first day of USA Swimming's U.S. Open hosted by Purdue, with a pair of Wildcat freshmen earning evening swims in the finals.

Freshman Emily Wong (Nepean, Ontario/St. Joseph's) qualified sixth overall with a 26.43 in the 50-meter freestyle, then finished the event in seventh after a 26.63 effort in the championship final.

Freshman Genny Szymanski (Haines, Alaska/Haines) earned a second swim in the B-final of the 200-meter backstroke with a 2:19.77 before finishing 16th overall with a 2:22.20.

Sophomore Hayley Fry (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) took 30th overall out of 88 competitors in the 100-meter breaststroke with a 1:14.26, while freshman Jenn Kocsis (Omaha, Neb./Marian) swam the 400-meter freestyle in a time of 4:37.99.
