Northwestern Earns Fourth-Consecutive Big Ten Swimmer of the Week Honor; Matt Grevers Named Collegeswimming.com National Swimmer of the Week

Nov. 21, 2006

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Senior Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) has been named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week for the second time this season, giving Northwestern a conference-record fourth-straight winner of the award. Grevers also has earned Collegeswimming.com's National Swimmer of the Week accolade for the fourth time in his career.

Grevers was named Swimmer of the Meet at the TYR Invitational over the weekend, winning all nine of his finals events with NCAA cut times. He broke six pool records, two school records and one Big Ten record during the meet, with his best performance coming with a 1:40.66 in the 200 back to shatter pool, school and conference marks in the event. The previous Big Ten record was 1:41.26, held by Chris DeJong of Michigan.

The Big Ten honor is the eighth of Grevers' career. Grevers has won the Collegeswimming.com weekly nod once in each of his four seasons as a Wildcat.

Grevers, Mike Alexandrov (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) and Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston) have combined to win the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honor in each of the last four weeks, with a Wildcat earning the award after every single NU men's competition so far this season.

Since the inception of the weekly honor in 1998-99, no school ever has won more than three in a row -- a record Northwestern also held after Alexandrov and Grevers combined to earn three-straight Swimmer of the Week nods from November 8-22, 2005.
