EVANSTON, Ill. -- For the second straight match, the Northwestern Wildcats dropped a one-goal decision to a ranked opponent, this time a 1-0 loss to No. 17 UIC at Flames Field in Chicago on Wednesday night.
The win drops the Wildcats to 9-5 overall while the Flames improve to 10-1-2.
"I thought it was great college soccer game tonight against two very good and evenly matched teams," head coach Tim Lenahan said. "Unfortunately we were not on the right end of the score but it was a great night for college soccer, particularly in the Chicago area. We have to find a way to put a ball or two into the back of the net and we're going to work real hard in practice over the next two days to make that happen. We still have a lot of soccer left to played. We still have two Big Ten games left and I think there are some good things in store for this team before the year is up."
The Wildcats out-shot the Flames 10-9 on the evening and owned a 6-4 advantage on corner kicks, but were held scoreless for the second straight match.
After the two teams battled to a 0-0 tie in the first period, UIC's Pavle Dundjer scored the difference maker with 14 minutes left in the match when he fired a rocket past NU goalkeeper Will Briley into the top of the net.
"I have to compliment [NU] coach Lenahan and his staff for what they have done with that program," UIC head coach John Trask said after the game. "Northwestern is a very good team."
Gerardo Alvarez led the Wildcats with six total shots on the night, three of those on goal. Carl Pett and Pat Coleman also each had one shot on UIC's goal.
Northwestern will now gear up for Michigan whom the 'Cats will face at 2 p.m. Sunday in Evanston.
