IRVINE, Calif. -- Northwestern fell to Santa Clara 2-0 Saturday evening at the UC Irvine College Challenge. Senior Brad North (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) recorded two shots. The Wildcats continue their trip out west Monday at 3 p.m. when they take on host UC Irvine.

The Broncos got on the board in the ninth minute on a penalty kick. That would be the only goal of the half and the teams went into the break with Santa Clara leading 1-0. After the goal, the 'Cats and Broncos engaged in a defensive struggle with neither team netting a goal for nearly 74 minutes. Santa Clara broke the stalemate in the 83rd minute when the Broncos' Jeff Cosgriff scored on a shot from 14 yards out to make the score 2-0. Freshman Mark Blades (Lakewood, Ohio/St. Ignatius) recorded the 'Cats only shot on goal in the contest

The loss is the Wildcats' first of the year and their record now stands at 2-1. The 'Cats are in the middle of four-game road trip. They return to Evanston for their Big Ten opener against Ohio State on Sept. 17.
