to Prousis talk about her time at the U.S. Open with WNUR.
NEW YORK -- Northwestern senior Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) fell in her first round match of the U.S. Open, tennis' most recognized tournament, to the pair of Camile Pin and Milagros Sequera 6-4, 6-3. The match took place on the 6,000 seat grandstand court at the USTA National Tennis Center.
Prousis and her partner, Stanford's Anne Yelsey, were scheduled to play the team of Amelie Mauresmo, the No. 1 singles seed, and Svetlana Kuznetsova, the No. 6 seed. But when Mauresmo pulled out of the match ten minutes before it was scheduled to start, the vacancy left was filled by the tandem of Pin and Sequera. Although the match was put on the grandstand court because of the involvement of one of the world's most famous players, it was still played on the Tennis Center's third largest court when Mauresmo and Kuznetsova withdrew.
"I am very proud of Alexis," head coach Claire Pollard said. "She did an amazing job of representing collegiate tennis and regardless of the result, playing in the U.S. Open will prove to be a great learning experience for her. She got an up close view of what kind of effort and preparation it takes to be a professional tennis player."
Prousis won the 2006 NCAA Doubles National Championship with her partner, former Wildcat Cristelle Grier. In 2005-06, Prousis compiled a 37-12 doubles record, including an 18-7 dual record and a perfect 10-0 mark in conference. She was an All-American in doubles and earned All-Big Ten honors for the second straight year.
