EVANSTON, Ill.-- David Roth couldn't have picked a better time to snap his scoreless game streak when his goal from the left wing in the 64th minute gave Northwestern a 1-0 win today over Dayton (0-2) in the final game of the Fourth Annual Lakeside Classic.
Roth, who also assisted on Daniel Chille's game-winner against Hofstra on Friday, hadn't scored a goal since the final game of the 2004 season in the NCAA Tournament.
"It's always great to win your own tournament. Every year that we have had this tournament, we've won it," head coach Tim Lenahan said. "We made a sub with Carl Pett after we got down a little after the missed penalty kick. Pett comes in and the first touch of his career, he assists Roth's goal--just like yesterday when Kevin Valenta's first touch was an assist.
"I give Dayton a lot of credit. They hung tough and made things difficult for us, but we'll take the shutout win at home. Overall I'm pleased with our progress, but we still have a long way to go."
Gerardo Alvarez had a chance earlier in the game to give the Wildcats the lead on a penalty kick, but was turned away when Zac Gibbons made a diving save. Alvarez led the Wildcats with five shots, three of which were on goal.
That save gave the Flyers new life--at least for the moment. However, a stingy Wildcat defense, led by Lakeside Classic MVP Mark Blades, held Dayton to just six shot attempts the entire game. Blades' quickness, speed and athleticism in the back smothered the opposition's attack throughout both games this weekend.
Will Briley, a Big Ten all-Freshman team pick last season, picked up the win in goal for the second straight game. He recorded four saves while earning his fourth career shutout.
Northwestern (2-0) has now won the event four straight years, going 7-0-1 in those contests. In game one today, Hofstra (1-1) defeated Northern Illinois (1-1) in overtime 3-2.
Joining Blades on the all-tournament team was Roth, Alvarez, Brad North and Chille.
Northwestern looks to improve to 3-0 for the first time in the Lenahan era when they head to Irvine, Calif. to take on UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine next Saturday and Monday (Sept. 2 & 4), respectively.
