LIMA, Peru -- Senior Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College), playing for his home country of Peru, won a match in Peru's 4-1 victory over Ecuador in the first round playoffs of the Davis Cup. Lock defeated Ecuador's Jose Zunino 6-4, 6-0 on clay at El Club Lawn Tenis de la Exposicion in Lima.
"One of the most important feelings one gets when entering the stadium is the enormous pressure, not only from the people that have such high expectations of you, but also from your whole country," Lock said. "It is so big, that it makes your legs shake, at least at the beginning. The feeling I got after I won, was one of incredible happiness for achieving what I had aimed for."
Lock finished 2006 with a 16-10 overall singles record and was 11-12 in doubles for the Wildcats. In the fall of 2005 Lock advanced to the round of 32 at the ITA Midwest Championships. He was 15-7 in dual matches and recorded two wins over top-40 opponents.
"We are thrilled to see Willy's Davis Cup result and we're very proud of him," head coach Paul Torricelli said. "It is every tennis player's dram to represent their country in Davis Cup. Willy has world-class talent and I would love to see him continue to play beyond graduation."
