EVANSTON, Ill.-- Senior Gerardo Alvarez notched the lone goal of the match this afternoon as Northwestern (1-0-1) tallied its first win of the preseason with a 1-0 triumph over Lafayette today in Richland, N.J. Alvarez scored in the 60th minute off an assist from junior David Roth for the victory.
All four goalkeepers -- Justin Pines, Misha Rosenthal, Will Briley and Rich Nassif -- split time in goal with Pines recording one save.
"All in all it was good game for us," head coach Tim Lenahan said. "Lafayette is a very, very hard working and competitive team who has been to the NCAA Tournament two of the last three years. Our attack really started to click in the second half and it was great to see Gerardo and Roth hook up again for a goal. We were organized again defensively and kept the game to zero in the back.
"The weather has been great here. The guys have enjoyed the training on the beach and I am looking forward to a great event on Friday evening."
'Cats Take On Rutgers Friday Night
That game Friday evening is part of the South Jersey Soccer Festival at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey -- Lenahan's old stomping grounds -- where the Wildcats will face Rutgers at 7 p.m. CT. Lenahan played and coached at Stockton where he played and received his bachelor's degree in 1983, served as assistant men's coach from 1984-88, head women's coach in 1988 and head men's coach from 1990-97.
"The game at Stockton should be a great game for us. It will end our week of training at the beach here in Ocean City against a very good opponent. As an alumnus of Richard Stockton College and a former coach, this game means a lot for other reasons. I always wanted to come back here and play at Stockton's beautiful soccer facility that was finished right around my departure. It's also the ten year reunion of our first championship team at Stockton. And the fact that it's against Rutgers and their great coach and good friend, Bob Reasso, really makes it a special night."
