May 5, 2006

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Following a stellar season, NU's senior All-American Cristelle Grier (Epsom, England/Putney), junior Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and freshman Georgia Rose (Mettawa, Ill./North Shore Country Day) each have been selected as one of the 64 players to compete in the 2006 NCAA Women's Tennis Championships singles competition, the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Subcommittee has announced. NU's doubles team of Grier and Prousis received a bid in the doubles competition as well.

With three singles qualifiers and a doubles team, the Wildcats will see a program-record four competitors play outside of the team competition. The singles and doubles competitions will run from May 23-28 at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif.

For Grier, this is her fourth-consecutive selection to both the NCAA singles and doubles championships. She is gunning for her fourth-straight All-America honor, and would be the first 'Cat in program history to do so. Grier is the nation's 13th-ranked singles player and plays with Prousis on the 13th-ranked doubles team. She received the Big Ten's automatic qualifier bid.

For Prousis, this is her first-career selection to the championship's singles and doubles competitions. Prousis is ranked No. 35 in singles by the ITA.

Rose, the nation's 45th-ranked singles player and reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year, will compete in her first NCAA singles championship in just her first year of college tennis.

In doubles, Grier and Prousis are ranked No. 13 and have compiled a 24-6 record this season.

The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 23-28 at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, California, following the conclusion of the team championship (May 18-22). Stanford University will serve as host.

All matches shall be the best of three sets. Regular scoring and a 12-point tiebreaker at six games all will be used for all matches.

The selection of teams and individuals for the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships is based on the prescribed criteria listed in the championships handbook and approved by the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet.

Automatic qualification into the Division I singles championships is awarded to any conference with one or more singles players ranked in the ITA Top 125 for singles. For conferences with more than one singles player within the ITA Top 125, the subcommittee will apply the NCAA selection criteria to determine which student-athlete is the automatic qualifier from those conferences.

Automatic qualification into the Division I doubles championships is awarded to any conference with one or more doubles teams ranked in the ITA Top 60 for doubles. For conferences with more than one doubles team within the ITA Top 60, the subcommittee will apply the NCAA selection criteria to determine which doubles team is the automatic qualifier from those conferences.
