BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Fueled by a career-best 4-under 68 in Friday's opening round, Northwestern junior Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) holds the individual lead at the 2006 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships, which are being hosted by Indiana University.

Kim, who carded an even-par 72 in the second round, holds a one-stroke lead over Indiana'a Elaine Harris. Michigan State's Sara Brown and Purdue's Maria Hernandez are in third place at 1-over.

As a team, the Wildcats are in sixth place with a 24-over 600 (297-303). Purdue and Ohio State lead the team race with a 10-over 586 and a 14-over 590, respectively.

Kim recorded four birdies and 14 pars for her first 18 holes. She notched birdies on holes seven, eight, nine and 11 to vault into the lead, a position she held for the remainder of the day.

In the second round, Kim notched four more birdies and finished at even par for a two-round score of 140. Her two-round total (4-under 140) is a Big Ten record for two rounds, breaking the mark of 141, set previously by Kari Damron (Purdue) and Stacy Orschell (Purdue), both at the 2000 Championships.

NU freshman Jennifer Hong (Windermere, Fla./The First Academy) is in 18th place with a 7-over 151 (74-77). Junior Heather Scholten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) is 28th at 9-over (78-75=153).

Sophomore Brittany Johnston (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) is 51st with a 14-over 158 (79-79). Classmate Katie Trachok (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) withdrew from the tournament before the start of the first round due to illness.

Northwestern's No. 6 player, sophomore Justina Yu (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman), fired a 17-over 161 (77-84) in her first action of the season.

The third round is set for 8 a.m. (CT) Saturday.
