EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's 61st-ranked men's tennis team finished the Big Ten season with an even 5-5 record, earning it a No. 7 seed in the upcoming conference tournament. The championship is Thursday through Sunday, April 27-30, at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn. The 'Cats are slated to face 10th-seeded Michigan State in the first round at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 27. The Wildcats defeated the Spartans 7-0 at the Combe Tennis Center during the regular season. Admission to the Big Ten Championship is free.

Northwestern enters the conference tournament looking to buck its recent conference losing skid, as 'Cats have fallen to No. 5 Illinois and No. 7 Ohio State in their final two matches of the regular season.

Despite the recent losses, Northwestern is playing some of its best tennis of the season and if a few points would have gone NU's way in its individual matches versus Illinois, the Wildcats very easily could have contended for the win.

While NU finished the conference regular-season slate in a three-way tie for fifth place with No. 58 Indiana and No. 57 Penn State, a tie breaker method of points scored versus tied teams was used to determine the No. 5, 6, and 7 seeds.

In its dual versus Michigan State earlier this season, Northwestern won eight of the nine matches, dropping only a decision at No. 3 doubles.

Results and updated brackets will available throughout the championship at the Gophersports.com and the Big Ten's 2006 Men's Tennis Championship page.
