EVANSTON, Ill. -- It still is April, but No. 17 Northwestern is wrapping up its 2006 home schedule in historic fashion. Before the final home game of the year Thursday against Loyola, the Wildcats will face Notre Dame Tuesday in the first-ever nationally televised game from Sharon J. Drysdale Field.
Game time for both contests is 4 p.m. Tuesday also is Northwestern's BIG GAME, an athletic department initiative founded by former Wildcat outfielder Erin Mobley to encourage student-athletes to support each other's sports.
Thursday's home finalé is the beginning of the 2006 Spring Women's Sport Weekend. Head women's basketball coach Beth Combs will throw out the first pitch.
Northwestern enters Tuesday's game as winners of its last four contests, having outscored its foes 32-1 last week. Junior Eileen Canney (Paradise, Calif./Paradise) has fired three-consecutive shutouts, and averaged 14 strikeouts per seven innings pitched in her three outings last week.
At the plate, junior Garland Cooper (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) has been flexing her first-team All-America muscle, pumping out a .727 batting average (8-of-11) with three doubles, two home runs and a 1.545 slugging percentage last week. Freshman Tammy Williams (El Dorado Springs, Mo./Osceola) also had a big week, batting .500 (5-of-10) with a double, a triple and two home runs to score seven times and drive in seven runs.
Northwestern faced Notre Dame four times last season, with all four contests being held at the Irish's Ivy Field. The Wildcats dropped the regular season meeting between the teams, 3-2, before falling in the first game between the two during NCAA Regional competition. Needing to defeat Notre Dame twice to advance to the Super Regionals, Northwestern did so by scores of 4-1 and 4-3.
