EVANSTON, Ill. -- For the second time in three weeks, Northwestern freshman Georgia Rose (Mettawa, Ill./North Shore Country Day) has been chosen as the Big Ten Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday. Rose received the laurel after she went a combined 6-0 last week in singles and doubles, including wins over three ranked opponents.
Currently ranked No. 44 by the ITA, Rose recorded a perfect week in both singles and doubles to help Northwestern remain on top of the Big Ten standings.
Rose first topped No. 73 Christian Thompson of Notre Dame at No. 2 singles on Wednesday in a grueling match that went to a third-set tiebreaker. Along with teammate Alexis Conill (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons), she also topped the Fighting Irish's 39th-ranked doubles team of Brook Buck and Kelcy Tefft.
Against Minnesota, Rose was perfect against Ida Malmberg, not allowing a single point in the 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles.
Facing her second ranked singles opponent of the week, Rose made short work of Iowa's 37th-ranked Meg Racette for an important point in Northwestern's 5-2 victory over No. 33 Iowa.
Rose, who has won 23-straight singles matches, is just five victories away from tying senior All-American teammate Cristelle Grier's (Epsom, England/Putney) school record of 28-consecutive solo victories.
