RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -- Northwestern put on a terrific show as tournament host at the 2006 Northwestern Invitational, which was played Monday and Tuesday at the Gary Player Signature Course at the Westin Mission Hills Resort.

Unfortunately for the 43rd-ranked Wildcats, they were unable to climb in the team standings on Tuesday and finished the day where they started -- in 12th place.

Kent State, which started the day with a 17-stroke lead on SMU, played steady golf and coasted to an 11-stroke win over the Mustangs. Michigan State placed third, six shots behind SMU.

"For a first-year tournament, we're really excited with the feedback from the competing teams," said NU coach Chris Regenberg. "As a team, we wanted to turn in a better performance, but that happens sometimes. We've got to regroup and just get better before our next tournament (April 22-23 at the Lady Buckeye Invitational)."

Northwestern's Heather Scholten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) placed a team-best 14th for the Wildcats. She finished with a 4-over 220 (71-73-76) after carding a 4-over 76 on Tuesday.

Kent State's Tara Delaney and Kira Meixner finished with 7-under 209's, but Delaney, on the strength of her final-round 71, was declared the tournament champion.

Northwestern's Kelly Robb (Concord, Mass./Middlesex), who was competing individually, actually turned in the Wildcats' best third-round score with a 2-over 74. She placed 52nd with a 16-over 232 (79-79-74).

Freshman Jennifer Hong (Windermere, Fla./The First Academy) wound up 30th with an 8-over 224 (79-70-75). Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood), Katie Trachok (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and Brittany Johnston (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) placed 58th, 60th and 62nd, respectively, at 18-over, 19-over and 20-over.

The top four finishing teams placed according to their latest Golfweek/Sagarin ranking: Kent State (No. 22), SMU (No. 24), Michigan State (No. 28) and Baylor (No. 30).
