EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern has named baseball's Dan Brauer (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) and softball's Tammy Williams (El Dorado Springs, Mo./Osceola) Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Brauer, a junior left-handed pitcher, was named after he tossed a complete-game, five-hit shutout Saturday afternoon at Ray Fisher Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich. NU won the game 5-0 and snapped a 12-game losing streak dating back to Feb. 25. The Chicagoland product struck out seven, four of them looking, and did not allow a runner to reach third base until the fifth inning. Only one runner reached third and four total runners reached scoring position. This is the sixth Hilton Garden Inn Athlete of the Week accolade of Brauer's career.
Williams, a freshman shortstop, earned the honor after she unleashed four home runs, including three in Sunday's doubleheader against Iowa, to help lead Northwestern to a 4-0 start in Big Ten play. Williams batted .615 on the weekend with a 1.692 slugging percentage, scoring seven times and driving in eight. She now is tied for the team lead in four-baggers with six. Northwestern outscored its opponents 41-6 over the weekend. This is the second Hilton Garden Inn Athlete of the Week Award of Williams' career.
