EVANSTON, Ill. - Top-ranked Northwestern jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back as the Wildcats defeated No. 18 Stanford today in Palo Alto, Calif. 19-8, their 29th straight win. Sarah Albrecht (Sr., Braintree, Mass./Thayer Academy) scored a career-high six goals and recorded two assists for eight points.
The win moves NU to 8-0 on the year while the Cardinal slips to 5-2.
"I was really pleased with the game overall," head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller said. "I think we played a really strong game offensively for 60 minutes. That was one of the things we really wanted to focus on."
Lindsey Munday (Sr., Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) had a repeat performance from Thursday with four goals and four assists for the second-consecutive game, giving her 100 assists for her career. Laura Glassanos (Sr., Hingham, Mass./Thayer Academy) added three goals and one assist.
Northwestern's defense, led by true-freshman goalkeeper Morgan Lathrop (Briarcliff, N.Y./The Hackley School) had another superb outing, allowing nine or fewer goals for the seventh time this season. Lathrop finished with five saves as Stanford managed only seven shots in the second period.
Stanford kept in the game with three straight goals to make it 7-3, but Albrecht and Munday came right back with two goals in the span of nine seconds to make it 9-3.
Leading 11-6 at halftime, NU put the game away with five straight goals, two from Albrecht and Glassanos and one from Munday, to give NU a 16-6 advantage with 21 minutes remaining.
Northwestern owned the draw controls 14-4 in the first half and 22-7 for the game. Hilary Bowen (Fr., Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) and Albrecht combined for 11 while Hannah Nielsen (Fr., Adelaide, Australia/Brighton Secondary) and Kristen Kjellman (Jr., Westwood, Mass./Westwood) each had three. Kjellman also led the team with nine ground balls.
The Wildcats are back in action next Friday, March 31 at Syracuse. Game time is 6 p.m. CT.
Game Notes: NU's 29-game win streak is the longest current streak in the country ... NU has outscored Stanford 35-11 over the last two meetings ... NU has now outscored the opposition 139-56 on the year, an average of more than 10 goals per game.
