EVANSTON, Ill. -- Having sat idle for most of last weekend after the Georgia rain wiped out the majority of the NFCA Leadoff Classic, No. 16 Northwestern is ready to prove its worth this weekend in Fullerton, Calif.
The Wildcats got just two games completed in Columbus, Ga., before an all-day drenching Saturday washed out the remainder of the slate. Northwestern fell to then-No. 24 Louisville, 2-0, before blasting Massachusetts, 7-2, in its two contests.
The Wildcats join 10 other teams including host Cal State Fullerton at the Worth Invitational in what hopefully will be sunny Southern California.
Northwestern opens the tournament Friday against UC Santa Barbara and Fullerton before taking on No. 3 Tennessee and No. 6 Stanford Saturday. The Wildcats close the event Sunday with a game against Texas Tech.
Northwestern's matchups against Tennessee and Stanford will mark the 'Cats fifth and sixth games of the year (in their first 16 contests) against teams ranked in the current NFCA coaches poll top 10.
Entering the weekend, senior Kristen Amegin (West Sacramento, Calif./Elk Grove) leads the Wildcats with a .382 batting average, four home runs, 12 RBIs and a .765 slugging percentage.
Junior Katie Logan (Tempe, Ariz./Corona del Sol) is batting .375 with a team-best 15 hits through 12 games.
In the circle, Wildcat hurlers Courtnay Foster (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro) and Eileen Canney (Paradise, Calif./Paradise) have had a successful start to NU's tough slate, both sporting ERA's under 2.00 with a trio of shutouts of top 25 teams between them. Canney currently has a 10.3 strikeout per seven innings ratio for the season, while Foster's sits at 9.1.
The games against UC Santa Barbara, Cal State Fullerton and Stanford will be available on Gametracker. No internet is anticipated to be available at Field 2 for the Tennessee and Texas Tech matchups, and therefore no Gametracker will be provided.
