SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Northwestern's women's foil team defeated the nation's top-ranked women's foil team, Notre Dame, for the second time this season to win the Midwest Conference Fencing Championship today at the Joyce Center Fieldhouse on the campus of Notre Dame.
Both the epée and sabre teams finished second during team competition.
The No. 1 seeded foil team received a bye in the first round before defeating Cleveland State (5-0), Michigan (5-1) and Notre Dame (5-4) to win the title.
The sabre team fell to Ohio State (5-0) after defeating Oberlin (5-0) and Detroit Mercy (5-1).
The epée team got a bye in the first round and defeated Michigan State (5-0) in the second round. NU fell to Notre Dame (5-2).
Northwestern's men's fencing team competes at a club level. But, combining the men's and women's scores from the Championships this weekend, NU finished fifth in the overall.
