David Merkow Climbs to Fifth Place at Puerto Rico Classic

RIO GRANDE, P.R. -- For the second straight day, junior David Merkow (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead Union) paced the Wildcats at the Puerto Rico Classic, shooting a 2-under 70 to climb to fifth place in the individual race. He is six strokes back of Oklahoma State's Pablo Martin.

As a team, the Wildcats shot a 10-over 298 on Monday and are now in 14th place with a 13-over 589 (291-298). Led by Martin, third-ranked Oklahoma State shot a blistering 16-under 272 to move into first place by one stroke (over Georgia). The Wildcats and Cowboys had been tied for eighth place after Sunday's first round.

Merkow is now 3-under (71-70=141) for the tournament and is just three strokes back of second place (Georgia's Chris Kirk). He now has carded 12 rounds of par or better out of 17 rounds in 2005-06. Merkow is shooting for his fourth top-20 finish of the year.

Junior Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) also was under par on Monday, firing a 1-under 71 to move into 30th place. Wilson is 1-over (74-71=145).

Sophomore Kyle Moore (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) is in 47th place with a 4-over 148 (72-76). Sophomore Dan Doyle (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) and senior Dillon Dougherty (Woodland, Calif./Woodland) are 78th and 87th, respectively. Doyle has an 11-over 155 (74-81) and Dougherty has a 16-over 160 (79-81).

The final round of the Puerto Rico Classic begins early Tuesday morning.
