EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's 13th-ranked wrestling team fell behind early, but won six-consecutive matches to close out the dual and take a 21-13 win over No. 18 Michigan State Friday at Welsh-Ryan Arena. After falling behind 13-3, the 'Cats rallied and took the lead for good after Mike Tamillow's win at 184 lbs.
No. 8 John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) took the mat first for the 'Cats to face third-ranked Nick Simmons at 125 lbs. Simmons scored on two stalling calls in the first period, but Velez shot and hit a takedown to go into the second period tied at 2-2. After a scoreless second, Simmons notched a takedown and two-point nearfall to take a 7-2 win with riding time.
At 133 lbs., Daniel Quintela (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) faced MSU's Jeff Wimberly at 133 lbs. Wimberly earned an early takedown to go up 2-0, but Quintela notched an escape to narrow the score to one entering the second period.
Quintela tied the score at 2-2 with an escape early in the second, but Wimberly still had the riding time advantage entering the final round. Wimberly tallied a reversal 30 seconds into the third, but Quintela responded with an escape and a takedown to go up 5-4 with one minute remaining. Quintela rode him long enough to get Wimberly's riding time under a minute and walked off with a 5-4 decision to tie the team score at 3-3.
Two top-10 wrestlers then took the mat as NU's sixth-ranked Ryan Lang faced the Spartans' fifth-ranked Andy Simmons.
Lang took the lead early, but Simmons stayed tough throughout the match. Simmons tied the score at 4-4 with an escape in the third period, then tallied at takedown at 6:14 to give Michigan State a 9-3 lead.
Freshman Marty Gould (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) then faced MSU's Darren McKnight at 149 lbs.
McKnight took a 4-2 lead into the second period, but Gould tallied an escape early to cut his deficit to one. McKnight tallied a takedown late in the second and went into the final round with a 6-3 lead. McKnight increased his lead to 7-3 with an escape early in the round and went on to a 13-4 victory.
Greg Hagel (Linwood, N.J./Blair Academy) looked to bring to bring Northwestern back into the match and immediately went to work versus the Spartans' 15th-ranked Tony Greathouse. Hagel notched an early takedown and recorded over two minutes of riding time in the first period. Then Hagel extended his lead to 6-2 in the third period, but Greathouse notched two late takedowns with under a minute to go to tie the score at 6-6. With the riding time he accumulated, however, Hagel walked off with a 7-6 win.
No. 19 Will Durkee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) looked to keep the momentum in the Wildcats' corner against the Spartans' Bryan Harney. Durkee immediately went to work and took a 5-0 lead less than a minute into the match. Up 7-2 entering the third period, Durkee notched two points and the riding time point to take the 9-2 win.
With the 'Cats still trailing 13-9, second-ranked Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) faced No. 5 R.J. Boudro at 174 lbs. Herbert got on the board first with an escape early in the second round. Midway through the second Herbert shot for Boudro's left leg, twisted him around and went up 3-0 with the takedown. After a Boudro escape, the two entered the third period where Herbert chose the up position to start.
While Boudro notched another escape, Herbert remained in control throughout the remainder of the match and took the 4-2 decision with riding time.
With the Wildcats down only one, Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) faced the Spartans' Joe Williams at 184 lbs. After a scoreless first period, the two traded takedowns in the second to enter the final round tied at 2-2.
There, Tamillow rode Williams for a majority of the period, but Williams tallied a takedown with under 10 seconds remaining to take a 4-2 lead. Not to be outdone, however, Tamillow rolled Williams over and earned a takedown as time expired. After the officials conferred, the points were held up and Tamillow took the 5-4 win with riding time, propelling Northwestern to a 15-13 lead--their first lead of the match.
Twelfth-ranked Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) looked to extend Northwestern's lead against Michigan State's Jeff Clemens. Delguyd tallied a first-period takedown, but Clemens responded with an escape.
Leading 2-1, Delguyd extended his lead to 3-1 with an escape midway through the round.
Clemens made it 3-2 with an escape early in the third, but the two mostly wrestled to a stalemate for the remainder of the match. Clemens tried two late shots, but Delguyd caught both and walked off with a 3-2 win.
In the final match of the night, No. 8 Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) took the mat versus Michigan State's Max Lossen at 285 lbs.
After a scoreless first period, Lossen lit up the board first with an escape early in the second. Down 1-0 to begin the third, Fox quickly tied the score with an escape of his own. The two circled each other for the remainder of the third and entered sudden victory tied at 1-1. When the sudden victory period went without a score, Fox began the first tiebreaker period in the up position. Lossen tallied an escape right away in the tiebreaker, but Fox responded with one of his own in the second.
In the second sudden victory Fox tallied a single-leg takedown to take the 4-2 win.
With the win, Northwestern improves to 9-4 on the season, 4-2 in the Big Ten. The Wildcats return to action at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12 at Iowa.
