EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern University women's basketball program, in conjunction with the Chicago Sky, is proud to announce its celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) when the Wildcats host Wisconsin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 5 at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
"National Girls and Women in Sports Day is a great opportunity to showcase all those who have come before us to pave the way and recognize those who are just beginning their paths in athletics," head coach Beth Combs said. "We will have young girls of all ages working with professional players under one roof. It is truly a celebration of women at their best."
In addition to the game between Northwestern and Wisconsin, Chicago Sky assistant coach Kathleen Weber will be conducting a middle school basketball clinic prior to the contest. For more information or to register for the clinic, please contact Kathleen at 307.399.5426.
Chicago Sky player Brooke Wyckoff will be signing autographs before the game in the lobby of the Arena. Chicago Sky rally towels will be given away and the first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive NGWSD wristbands.
Special guest emcee Gail Fischer of Comcast SportsNet will recognize Northwestern women's athletic programs and all female athletes at halftime.
An autograph session featuring NU women's basketball student-athletes will follow the game.
NGWSD began in 1987 as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and her work to assure equality for women's sports. Hyman died of Marfan's Syndrome in 1986 while competing in a volleyball tournament in Japan. Since that time, NGWSD has evolved into a day to acknowledge the past and recognize current sports achievements, the positive influence of sports participation, and the continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports.
