Wildcats Defeat No. 8 Yale, No. 3 Columbia and NYU; Fall to No. 6 St. Johns

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's seventh-ranked women's fencing team continued its winning ways Sunday at the NYU Duals in New York City. Hosted by New York University, the Wildcats went 3-1 on the day and improved its overall record to 20-2. NU defeated No. 8 Yale, No. 3 Columbia and NYU, but fell to sixth-ranked St. Johns.

In the first match of the day, the Wildcats defeated eighth-ranked Yale 20-7. The epee and sabre squads each went 7-2, while the foil team won six of its nine bouts.

NU followed the Yale win with a come-from-behind 14-13 win over third-ranked Columbia. Down 11-13 with only three matches left, the epee squad won all three of the final matches to pull out the 14-13 win over a hot Columbia squad. NU's win was Columbia's only loss of the day, as the Lions defeated No. 1 Notre Dame and No. 2 Ohio State.

Still on a high from the Columbia win, the Wildcats fell to sixth-ranked St. Johns 15-12. With only a couple minutes between bouts, the foil team struggled, losing 7-2. The epee squad lost 4-5, but the sabre team won 6-3.

In the final match of the day, NU defeated host NYU 22-5. The foil team bounced back in a big way, winning 9-0. The sabre team went 8-1 and epee squad won 5-4.

With the three wins, NU improved its overall record in dual matches to 20-2. The Cats are next in action when they travel to South Bend, Ind., for the Notre Dame Duals on Jan. 28.
