Nemecek Finishes Second at USFA North America Cup in Houston, Texas

HOUSTON, Texas - Northwestern's women's fencing team competed at the USFA North America Cup (Div. I/Jr.) in Houston, Texas over the weekend. Freshman foilist Sam Nemecek (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) placed second out of 108 entries in the junior women's foil competition.

On Friday, five different Wildcats placed in the Division I women's sabre category. Junior Sophie Eustis (Andover, Mass./Concord Academy) was NU's top finisher, ending the day in 61st. Sophomore Gina Annunziato (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) placed 72nd, followed by Adrienne Shon (San Diego, Calif./The Bishop's School) in 75th, Mai Vu (New York, N.Y./Bronx Science) in a tie for 77th and Emily Pasternak (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) in 80th.

In the junior women's epée category, freshman Megan Ross (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area) finished in an impressive 21st place. Freshman Kellie Fry (Gladstone, N.J./Bernards) placed 52, while Gabrielle Aiuto (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck North) placed 61st.

On Saturday, Nemecek shined in the junior women's foil. Her second place finish was the highest by a Wildcat over the weekend.

Northwestern is back in action when they travel to the east coast for a pair of dual meets. On Saturday, Penn will host NU in Philadelphia for the Penn Duals, followed by the NYU Duals on Sunday in New York.
