CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- No. 13 Northwestern used victories in the final-five weight classes to top No. 19 Hofstra 26-13 in its first consolation match at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals. Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) pinned Hofstra's fourth-ranked Mike Patrovich to give NU the lead and swing the match's momentum.
Senior John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) once again took the mat first for the Wildcats, facing Hofstra's Jon Fennell. Velez struck first, grabbing Fennell's left leg and taking him down to take a 2-0 lead. With 45 seconds to go in the first period, Velez extended his lead to 5-0 after earning a three-point takedown.
Starting down to begin the second period, Velez quickly made the score 6-0 after using a stand up to escape. After Finell missed on a takedown shot, Velez used a double-leg takedown to extend his lead to 8-0.
Velez tallied two more takedowns and a three-point nearfall in the third period, winning by a technical fall, 16-1.
Hofstra was then penalized one point when it was cited for team misconduct, and took a 5-0 lead into the 133-pound weight class.
At 133 lbs., Daniel Quintela (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) faced the Pride's Ricky LaForge. LaForge took a 2-0 lead in the first period after recording a takedown. Neither wrestler scored in the second round, but LaForge's extended his lead to 3-0 when he recorded an escape early in the third period. LaForge's went up by 5-0 when he recorded a reversal with 32 seconds remaining in the match and won 6-0 with the riding time.
Freshman Marty Gould (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) faced Hofstra's 15th-ranked Charles Griffin at 141 lbs. Griffin took a 2-0 lead in the first period with a takedown, but Gould responded with an escape to go into the second period down 2-1. Following a scoreless second period, Griffin earned points on an escape and a takedown to take a 5-1 lead. With the riding time, Griffin took the match, 6-1 and Hofstra tied the team score at 5-5 to enter the 149-pound weight class.
After Jimmy Kim (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria Community) fell to No. 3 Jon Masa at 149 lbs., Greg Hagel (Linwood, N.J./Blair Academy) took the mat at the 157-pound weight class with the Wildcats trailing 10-5.
Hagel faced Hofstra's 17th-ranked James Strouse in the match and Strouse quickly notched a takedown to take a 2-0 lead. Hagel cut his deficit to one after tallying an escape midway through the first period and went into the second period trailing 2-1.
Hagel scored on a takedown with 1:20 to go in the second period to take a 3-2 lead. Strouse responded by tallying an escape and a takedown late in the period to go into the final round with a 5-3 lead. Hagel was unable to score in the final round and Strouse scored on an escape to take the match, 6-3.
With Northwestern trailing 13-5, Will Durkee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) faced the Pride's Chris Vondruska at 165 lbs. Vondruska got a hold of Durkee's right leg and took him down with nine seconds remaining the first half to take a 2-0 lead. Durkee scored on point on an escape in the second period and entered the final round trailing 2-1. Vondruska scored on an escape to begin the third period, pushing his lead to 3-1. With only four seconds remaining, however, Durkee recorded a takedown on the mat's edge to even the score at 3-3 and send the match into overtime. Starting the second tiebreaker period down, Durkee tallied an escape and went on to take the match, 4-3, bringing the score to 13-8.
At 174 lbs., second-ranked Jake Herbert took the mat for the Wildcats and faced Hofstra's fourth-ranked Patrovich. Patrovich took an early 2-0 lead on a takedown, but Herbert responded with a takedown and subsequent fall at 2:05 to take swing the match's momentum and give Northwestern a 14-13 lead.
Holding onto a one point lead with only three weight classes to go, sophomore Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) met Hofstra's Joe Rovelli at 184 lbs. Rovelli quickly took a 2-0 lead on a takedown, but Tamillow scored on an escape with just over 1:30 left in the first period to make the score 2-1. Tamillow was awarded a point after an illegal hold from Rovelli and the two entered the second period tied at 2-2. Tamillow scored a reversal with 1:15 remaining the second round to take a 4-2 lead into the third period.
Tamillow started the third period in the up position, but surrendered the lead when Rovelli recorded a reversal to tie the score at 4-4. Tamillow then scored a reversal of his own with under 30 seconds remaining to take the match, 6-4.
With Northwestern leading 17-13, Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) took the mat at the 197 lbs., facing Hofstra's Chris Weidman. The two wrestled to a scoreless first period, but Delguyd scored an escape early in the second to take a 1-0 lead. Delguyd then increased his lead to 3-0 on a double-leg takedown on the edge with 56 seconds remaining in the period. Weidman notched an escape with less than 10 seconds remaining the period, but Delguyd entered the final round holding onto a 3-1 lead.
Weidman made the score 3-2 when he scored an escape early in the third, but Delguyd took the match 4-2 with the riding point, extending Northwestern's lead to 20-13 entering the final weight class.
At 285 lbs., sophomore Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) faced Hofstra's Jon Andriac. Fox came out and scored a takedown, but Andriac quickly tied the score at 2-2 with a reversal. Fox responded with a takedown, then pinned Andriac at 2:38, giving Northwestern a 26-13 win.
With the win, the Wildcats improve their dual record to 5-1 this season. The 'Cats now face Arizona State at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14.
