INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- Senior Cristelle Grier (Epsom, England/Putney) and junior Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) each went 2-0 in singles on the first day of the 2006 National Collegiate Tennis Championships, advancing to the quarterfinal round.
Prousis, who received a No. 12 national-singles ranking by the ITA earlier this week, began singles play by defeating Texas' Mia Marovic 6-1, 6-2.
In the round of 16, the second-seeded Prousis topped Kentucky's unseeded Joelle Schwenk 7-5, 7-5, advancing to Saturday's quarterfinal round. With the wins, Prousis improves her record to 15-4 this season.
The No. 3 seeded Grier also won both her singles matches on the day. In her first match, Grier topped Texas' Courtney Zauft 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the round of 16.
There, Grier met Southern California's Lindsey Nelson. Nelson took the first set and forced the second to a tiebreaker, but Grier roared back for the 4-6, 7-6 (8), 6-1 win, propelling her into the singles quarterfinals. Grier now stands at 12-4 this season.
Jamie Peisel (Savannah, Ga./Savannah Country Day) went 1-1 on the day, falling in the round of 16. In her first match, Peisel topped Kentucky's Liis Sober 6-2, 6-3.
In the round of 16, Peisel fell to eighth-seeded Diane Mattias of Southern California 6-3, 6-1.
Freshmen Nazlie Ghazal (Temecula, Calif./Chapparal) and Georgia Rose (Mettawa, Ill./Northshore Country Day) each fell in the first round of singles play.
Rose won her first set versus Stanford's Jessica Nguyen, but couldn't hold on in the end, falling 1-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Ghazal fell to UCLA's Ana Victoria Lind 6-2, 6-1.
The Wildcats resume play Saturday with singles championship and consolation rounds through the semifinals.
