Northwestern In Second at <i>Dallas Morning News</i> Swimming & Diving Classic

DALLAS -- Northwestern's Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) emerged victorious in the 100 back over the same man he defeated to win last year's NCAA title in the highlight of the first day at the Dallas Morning News Swimming & Diving Classic.

The No. 17-ranked Wildcats currently sit in second place in the meet with 162 points. No. 7 Florida leads the event with 168.5 points, while host Southern Methodist is 10 points back of NU with 152.

Northwestern opened the meet with a five-second victory in the 400 medley relay, swimming an NCAA `B' standard of 3:14.85. Grevers, junior Mike Alexandrov (Champaign, Ill./Centennial), sophomore Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) and sophomore David Kormushoff (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) comprised the relay.

Alexandrov followed with a second-place finish in the 400 IM, swimming a time of 3:56.10. Freshman Gavin D'Amico (Edmonton, Alberta/Strathcona) placed in the consolation final to earn points for the 'Cats.

The 200 freestyle featured the first faceoff between two of the country's top swimmers in Grevers and Florida's Ryan Lochte. Both swam NCAA `A' standards in the event, but it was Lochte who finished first in the race, swimming a 1:35.57 while Grevers finished in 1:36.13. Both times bested the previous pool and meet records, while Grevers' time broke Northwestern's seven-year old school record.

Freshman Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston) won the consolation of the 200 free with an NCAA `B' time of 1:38.72.

Bubolz swam the 50 free for the Wildcats, placing third with a 20.89. Sophomore Jon Ehret (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy College Prep) was 10th to earn three points for NU.

Freshman diver Alex Kiaie (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) took fifth on the 1-meter board to net 10 points for Northwestern.

Bubolz earned a win in the 100 butterfly, swimming an NCAA `B' time of 47.80. Ehret pointed for the second time in the meet with a ninth-place finish for the 'Cats.

The next event presented a rematch from the 2005 NCAA Championships, where Grevers narrowly out-touched Lochte for the title in the 100 back. Earlier in the meet, Lochte topped Grevers in the 200 free, but in his signature event it was Grevers who came out No. 1.

Again, both swimmers turned in NCAA `A' times, with Grevers' 47.16 winning over Lochte by .09 seconds. Lochte entered the meet with the top time in the nation in the 100 back.

Northwestern freshman Adam Beckman (Kearney, Neb./Kearney) finished in eighth with a 52.15 in the consolation final.

Alexandrov made it three wins in a row for the 'Cats with a 54.74 `B' standard in the 100 breast. Kormushoff ended up in eighth with a 56.75 for Northwestern. Those performances pushed the Wildcats into the lead in the meet for the first time since the second event with 146 points, 1.5 points ahead of No. 7 Florida.

Northwestern rounded out the first day of action with a fourth-place finish in the 800 free relay.
