EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's fencing team went 6-1 in Day 2 of the NU Duals held at NU's Sports Pavilion and Aquatic Center on the Wildcats' Evanston campus. Northwestern won its first three rounds before falling to Notre Dame. NU responded winning its last three bouts to finish the two-day meet 12-1 overall.
In round one against Michigan, NU defeated the Wolverines 23-4 with the sabre team going 7-2 and both the foil and epée squads going 8-1. Emily Pasternak went 3-0 with a combined score of 15-4.
NU defeated Detroit-Mercy 23-4 in round two of the day. The sabre team went 6-3, while the foil squad was 8-1 and the epée team 9-0. Christina Wang won both her foil bouts with a combined record of 10-2.
Round three saw the Wildcats beat Cal State Fullerton 19-8. The sabre team was 6-3, while the foil squad was 7-2 and the epée team 6-3. Courtney DuBois won each of her epée bouts with a combined score of 10-4.
Notre Dame got the best of the Wildcats in round four, winning 21-6. The Irish got up on the sabre and foil squads 4-0 before moving ahead 4-1 on the epée team. The Wildcats lost five bouts 5-4.
The Wildcats responded with a round five 19-8 defeat of Wane State. The saber and foil teams went 8-1 and the epée team won 9-0. Jessica Florendo won all three of her foil bouts.
Johns Hopkins lost 21-6 in round six. The sabre team lost 4-5, before the foil team won 9-0 and epée 8-1. Wang won both of her foil bouts by a combined score of 10-4.
In the final round of the day, NU defeated Lawrence 25-2. The saber and foil teams each won 8-1, before the epée squad went 9-0.
NU is next in action when they travel to Pittsburgh, Pa., for the USFA North America Cup (Div. I). Day one of the meet begins Dec. 9.
