Results From the Junior/Cadet World Cup in Albuquerque, N.M.

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's women's fencing team participated in the Junior/Cadet World Cup Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. over the weekend. While no team scores are kept, several Wildcats were on display.

Freshman foilist Sam Nemecek (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) posted NU's most impressive finish, winning a silver medal in the foil division. Nemechek finished second out of 143 competitors. Her World Team teammate defeated her for the gold medal.

In sabre, freshman Adrienne Shon (San Diego, Calif./The Bishop's School) finished in 51st place, while sophomore Gina Annunziato (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) placed 59th. A total of 82 competitors competed in the sabre category.

In epée, freshman Megan Ross (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area) finished in an outstanding 20th place. Sophomore Gabrielle Aiuto (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck North) placed 43rd and freshman Kellie Fry (Gladstone, N.J./Bernards) finished 51st. There were 116 competitors in the epée division.

Most Wildcat upperclassmen were not allowed to participate in this weekend's competition, as only fencers age 20 and younger could enter.

The entire women's fencing team will be back in action this weekend when Northwestern hosts the NU Duals at the Sports and Aquatic Center (SPAC) on NU's Evanston campus. The Duals begin Saturday at 7 a.m.
