EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Northwestern's men's team opened main draw play at the 2005 Big Ten Indoor Singles Championships Saturday. Freshman Marc Dwyer (Peachtree, Ga./University of Nebraska-Independent Study High School) won two matches on the day to advance to the round of 16.
Dwyer began the day by defeating Iowa's J.P. Ritchie in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. Dwyer then topped Purdue's Kurt Zaske 7-6(2), 6-2 to move to the round of 16. Dwyer faces Minnesota's D.J. Geatz Sunday.
After qualifying for the main draw on Friday, Alexey Evstratenkov (Moscow, Russia/Moscow International Gymnasia) won his first-round match over Minnesota's Mikey Kantar 7-6 (8), 6-0. Evstratenkov then fell in the second round to Michigan's Brian Hung. He faces Wisconsin's Lance Karsorov Sunday in consolation play.
Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) also won his first match of the day, a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Ohio State's Todd Wojikowski. Christian fell in the second round and faces Ohio State's Ty Shaub Sunday in a consolation second-round match.
Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) dropped his first-round match, but won his first consolation match against Wisconsin's Felipe Beldido, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.
Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbrügge) fell in his first round match, but came back in the consolation bracket to top Purdue's Scott Warner in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
After losing his opening-round match, sophomore Juan Gomez also rebounded in consolation action, edging Michigan State's Adam Monich 6-2, 6-3.
Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) dropped his first-round match against Wisconsin's Nolan Polley 6-4, 6-4. Lock did not play any consolation matches.
