EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Alexey Evstratenkov (Moscow, Russia/Moscow International Gymnasia) and Andrew Hoffman (Fremont, Neb./Fremont) competed for Northwestern Friday at the Big Ten Indoor Singles Championships, hosted by Michigan State. Evstratenkov topped Penn State's Alex Mast, qualifying for singles main draw play, beginning Saturday.
After receiving an opening-round bye, Evstratenkov won his third match of the season in straight sets, beating Mast 6-3, 6-4. Evstratenkov faces Minnesota's Raul Schwark in Saturday's main draw opening round.
Hoffman did not fair as well in his qualifying match. Hoffman fell in his qualifying opening-round match against Wisconsin's Glan Hodgson 6-4, 6-2.
The remaining Wildcats begin play Saturday in the main draw portion of the tournament.
Junior Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) begins play by facing Indiana's Mario Gonzalez.
Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) looks for his fifth win this fall when he faces Michigan State's Nick Rinks.
No. 7 seed Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) then faces Wisconsin's Nolan Polley.
No. 16 seed Marc Dwyer (Peachtree, Ga./University of Nebraska-Independent Study High School) begins his first college Big Ten event by facing Purdue's Keubia Mabatah, who qualified main draw play Friday.
Juan Gomez (Mexico City, Mexico/Southern Florida) begins the tournament when he faces Ohio State's Bryan Koniecko.
Second-seeded Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lobrügge) starts play by facing Minnesota's Andres Osario.
