Wildcats Sign A Pair of Players For 2006-07 Campaign

Nov. 10, 2005

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern head coach Pat Goss signed a pair of top-notch junior golfers -- Jonathan Bowers of Columbus, Ohio (Bishop Watterson) and David Lipsky of La Canada, Calif. (La Canada) -- to National Letters of Intent on Thursday. The duo will begin their Northwestern careers in the fall of 2006.

Bowers was the 2005 Ohio High School individual state champion after helping lead Bishop Watterson to the team title in 2004 when he finished as the individual runner-up.

A team co-captain since his sophomore year, Bowers qualified for the 2005 USGA Junior Amateur, where he advanced to the second round of match play. He played in three AJGA events, finishing second, fifth and 10th.

Bowers is the senior class president at Bishop Watterson and a member of the school's National Honor Society. He will become the third Columbus resident on the NU roster, joining current players Chris Wilson (Dublin Coffman) and Kyle Moore (Dublin Scioto).

Lipsky recorded a pair of top-five finishes at two AJGA events this year -- he placed second at the Greater Hartford Jaycees event after shooting an opening-round 65, and then was fifth at the Lessings Classic. He also has finished 11th, 12th and 16th at additional AJGA tournaments in 2004 and '05.

Lipsky won the Rio Hondo High School League Tournament in both 2004 and '05. A first-team All-Los Angeles Area and first-team Southern Section performer, he captured the 2004 Junior Tour Championship at PGA West.

Northwestern is currently ranked 14th nationally in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin index. The Wildcats, who boast 2005 U.S. Amateur runner-up Dillon Dougherty on their roster, have produced several professional players of late, including Luke Donald, a 2001 graduate and one of the world's top golfers.
