SAN MARTIN, Calif. -- After firing a tournament-best team round of 277 on Monday, 16th-ranked Northwestern finished with a 1-under 287 on Tuesday and held off California and Arkansas for a second-place showing in the first CordeValle Collegiate.
Fifth-ranked UCLA, the host institution, won the event with a 15-under 849, six strokes better than the Wildcats (9-under 855), who capped off an outstanding fall with this performance. Northwestern recorded a first and two second-place finishes in three of its five fall events.
Nine of the 15 teams were ranked in the top 50 of the Golfweek/Sagarin index, and 12 players were ranked in the individual top 50.
Senior Dillon Dougherty (Woodland, Calif./Woodland) led the Wildcats' balanced team showing, placing fourth after shooting an even-par 72 on Tuesday. Dougherty carded a 3-under 213 (73-68-72) for the 54 holes. Right behind Dougherty was sophomore Dan Doyle (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek), who carded a team-best 68 on Tuesday. His strong third-round effort moved him from 26th to seventh place. Doyle finished at 2-under (74-72-68=214).
Sophomore Kyle Moore (Dublin, Ohio/Scioto) will go in the CordeValle record books with the single-best 18-hole score -- a 65 that he shot on Monday. Moore closed with a 3-over 75 on Tuesday to place 11th at 1-under (75-65-75=215).
Juniors David Merkow (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead Union) and Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) placed 23rd and 55th, respectively. Merkow finished 2-over (69-72-77=218) while Wilson was 10-over (76-78-72=226).

Northwestern now takes a three-month break for the winter and then returns to action in February at the Puerto Rico Classic.
