COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Senior Cristelle Grier (Epsom, England/Putney) won her first match of the day to make her way into the quarterfinals, but fell to Georgia Tech's Kristi Miller, Friday at the ITA National Indoor Championships.

Grier started her day by facing William & Mary's Megan Muth. Grier made short work of Muth, winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals.

Once there, the third-seeded Miller edged Grier, 6-1, 6-4. Grier's fall record now stands at 9-4.

Later, junior Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) faced No. 1 seed Suzi Fodor of USC. Prousis came out hot, taking the first set in a marathon match. Fodor came back, however, and took the next two sets, winning 6-7(9), 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles, Grier/Prousis improved to 7-1 on the season after topping Pepperdine's Sylvia Kosakowski and Merve Asimigil, 8-1.

The rest of the Wildcats were busy with the opening day at the Western Michigan Super Challenge, held in Kalamazoo, Mich.

The Wildcats ended the first day with an impressive 7-1 mark, 5-0 in singles.

Freshman Georgia Rose (Mettawa, Ill./North Shore Country Day) began the tournament with a win over Western Michigan's Rattiya Hiranrat 6-4, 6-3. With the win, Rose improves to 4-3 this fall.

Jamie Peisel (Savanah, Ga./Savanah Country Day) followed suit with a win of her own. Peisel lost the second set, but rallied back for the 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win.

Senior Feriel Esseghir (Sarasota, Fla./UCLA) notched her first win this fall, outlasting WMU's Carrie Jeamaire 6-7, 6-0, 7-5.

Freshman Nazlie Ghazal (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) improved to 7-3 on the season after beating the Broncos' Reedhina Parekh 6-3, 6-1.

Northwestern wrapped its singles action when Alexis Conill (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) topped Kerstin-Beeke Pahl 6-0, 7-5.

The doubles team of Conill/Ghazal defeated Purdue's Brittany Minna and Randi Schuler 8-6.

The team of Peisel/Colleen Mead (Western Michigan) beat the Boilermakers' Anna Dzeva and Whitney Reys 8-0, for the 'Cats seventh victory of the day.

Northwestern's only loss of the day came when Purdue's Mallory Voelker and Brooke Beir slipped past Esseghir/Rose 8-2. The Western Michigan Super Challenge returns to action at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5.
