COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Northwestern senior Cristelle Grier (Epsom, England/Putney) topped Clemson's Federica van Alrichem in straight sets Thursday to advance to the round of 16 at the 2005 ITA National Indoor Championships.

The sixth-seeded Grier started play for the Wildcats by going the distance with van Alrichem in the first set, winning 7-5. Grier settled in for the second set, taking it handily. Grier won the match 7-5, 6-1.

Northwestern's Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest), who qualified for the tournament by winning the 2005 ITA Midwest Regional singles title last week, wasn't as fortunate Thursday.

Prousis opened play by facing No. 2 seed Amanda Fink of USC. After Fink took the first set, Prousis came roaring back to take the second set. In the end, Finch was too much and took the match 6-1, 3-6, 6-0.

In doubles action, Grier and Prousis faced Stanford's Alice Barnes and Anne Yelsey in the first round. Barnes/Yelsey topped Grier/Prousis in a close match, 8-6.

Play resumes Friday, with Grier opening play against William & Mary's Megan Muth.

After facing the No. 2 seed in the first round, the competition doesn't get easier for Prousis, who faces California's first-seeded Suzi Fodor in the consolation bracket. Fodor fell in straight sets to Florida's Diana Srebovic in the first round.

In consolation doubles, Grier/Prousis take on Pepperdine's Bianca Dulgheru and Eva Dickes.
