PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. -- Northwestern's Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and Georgia Rose (Mettawa, Ill./North Shore Country Day) wrapped up their second day at the 2005 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships. Prousis advanced to the tournament's main draw, where she and teammate Cristelle Grier (Epsom, England/Putney) begin competition Thursday.
After rolling through Tuesday's competition, Prousis took on Notre Dame's Christian Thompson to decide who would advance to the tournament's main-draw competition. Prousis took the first set from Thompson, but dropped the second set, 4-6. In the third, Prousis showed why she is the 50th-ranked player in the country, taking it handily. Prousis ended up winning the match, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
"Alexis looked really good," assistant coach David Mullins said. "She had played the girl a few times before and knew her tendencies. She may have been a bit nervous in the second set when it was closer than she expected, but she responded by running away with the third set," Mullins said.
With the win, Prousis enters the main draw portion of the tournament, where she joins Grier, who was automatically selected for the main draw.
Northwestern joins Florida, Georgia, Stanford, Cal and BYU as the only schools to have multiple participants in the main draw portion of the tournament.
Prousis kicks off the main draw by taking on No. 17 Amanda Fish of Vanderbilt, while the 11th-ranked Grier faces Stanford's No. 10 Alice Barnes.
In consolation action Wednesday, Rose fell to Texas A&M's Anna Lubinsky. Rose led 4-3 in the first set when she had to retire the match due to injury.
In consolation doubles, Prousis and Rose dropped their match to USC's DeVara/Matias, 8-5.
