INDIANAPOLIS -- Senior Kevin Earnest (Lombard, Ill./Benet Academy) scored the match winner with just over a minute left in regulation to give Northwestern a 2-1 victory over Butler Sunday. Junior forward Brad North (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) netted his eighth goal of the season in the win.
North got the Wildcats on the board first just under 10 minutes into the match. On a clear from the Butler keeper, North deflected the ball off his chest, outraced the keeper to the ball and scored on the empty net.
The 'Cats outshot Butler 8-4 in the first half, while enjoying a 4-2 corner kick advantage.
Butler's Scott Olsen tied the match at 1-1 when he scored on a free kick following a Northwestern foul midway through the second half.
In the waning moments of the match, Alvarez sent a long pass behind the Butler defense to a streaking Earnest. Earnest broke free for a one-on-one opportunity with the Bulldog keeper and slipped a shot past his right side, giving the Wildcats a 2-1 lead.
The 'Cats took 14 shots during the match, eight on goal. Northwestern improves to 9-5-2 on the season with the win.
Northwestern returns to action at home for its regular-season finale, a 1 p.m. match against Wisconsin Sunday, Nov. 6.
GAME NOTES
Alvarez moved into second place on NU's career-assists list with his assist to Earnest.
North moved to No. 8 on NU's career-points list, with 43 total points, after his early goal.
Northwestern is set to host the Big Ten Men's Soccer Championship Nov. 10-13.
