Brett Basanez, Northewstern's fifth-year senior quarterback has started 35 straight games and is college football's (Division I-A) leading active passer (9,139 yards), just in front of USC's Matt Leinart (9,026 yards). Basanez continues his assault on the Big Ten record book: he ranks third in total offensive plays (1,700), third in pass attempts (1,352), fifth in completions (778), fourth in total offense (9,980) and sixth in passing yardage (9,139). Basanez has 22 200-plus-yard passing games--an NU record. With the 331 passing yards vs. Michigan State, he also notched his eighth straight game with 200-or-more yards--an NU record. Basanez is 861 passing yards shy of the coveted 10,000-yard career mark. He is 20 yards shy of the 10,000 mark for career total offense--only 39 players in NCAA history have ever reached that major milestone.

Despite playing part of one season (2002) with a broken leg and another (2004) with a dislocated throwing shoulder, Basanez has become the Wildcats' all-time leader in passing yardage, pass completions and total offense this season. He accomplished all three feats in the Sept. 10 victory over Northern Illinois, his 17th win as the Wildcats' starting QB. Basanez, who became NU's winningest quarterback at Michigan State with his 20th career victory, set a single-game school-record by completing 80.0 percent of his passes (24-of-30).
