ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Northwestern's men's tennis team had three doubles teams compete in the first day of doubles play at the 2005 ITA Midwest Regional Championships.
Northwestern's 14th-seeded doubles team of Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) and Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) started play out on the right note for the Wildcats, topping Minnesota's team of Adrien Debreyne and Raoul Schwark, 8-2.
The team Andrew Hoffman (Fremont, Neb./Fremont) and Alexey Evstratenkov (Moscow, Russia/Moscow International Gymnasia) dropped their first-round match to 10th-seeded Pramod Dabir and Brandon Davis of Illinois, 8-6.
Finally, Marc Dwyer (Peachtree, Ga./University of Nebraska-Independent High School) and Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium Lohbrügge) fell in the tight match to Purdue's team of Eric Hodgman and Patrick Rose, 9-7.
Doubles play, as well as the main-draw portion of singles competition, begins Saturday.
