EVANSTON, Ill. -- In front of nearly 1,000 fans, Northwestern's men's soccer team played some of its most inspired soccer of the year against perennial powerhouse Indiana Sunday, playing to a 1-1 tie with the Hoosiers. Daniel Chille (Lake Zurich, Ill./Stevenson) scored just 12 minutes into the match for the Wildcats.
Northwestern lit up the scoreboard first at 12:32. After a foul was called against Indiana, Gerardo Alvarez (Aurora, Ill./Marmion Academy) served a ball into the Hoosier box. Adam Sirois (Dover, N.H./Berwick Academy) headed the ball toward the goal, but Indiana's keeper stopped his try. On the ensuing rebound, Chille stuck it to the back of the net to make the score 1-0.
With one of the most prolific offenses in college soccer, Indiana put the pressure on Northwestern's defense. The Wildcats responded by holding Indiana to six shots-on-goal, while not allowing Indiana to settle in to its offensive rhythm. Freshman goalkeeper Misha Rosenthal (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) recorded five saves in the match.
"Our defense played very well today," head coach Tim Lenahan said. "Sammy Semwangu (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) was great. He's one of the best one-on-one defenders in the league."
The Hoosiers did get on the board at 29:28 to knot the match up at 1-1.
The remaining 80:31 was a physical battle in which both teams showcased their skill as well as their conditioning.
Throughout the match, Northwestern stayed on the offensive. In the second half and overtime sessions, the Wildcats repeatedly took possession away from the Hoosier offense and found Brad North (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) streaking behind Indiana's defense for scoring opportunities.
"This was a great game. There was a great crowd, great weather and it was parents' day. It was just a great day for soccer," Lenahan said.
For the match, Indiana outshot the Wildcats 16-8, while enjoying an 8-5 corner kicks advantage. With the tie, Northwestern moves to 7-4-1 on the season, 1-2-1 in the Big Ten.
Northwestern is back in action at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at Loyola Marymount.
