PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. -- Northwestern sophomore Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) won two matches Tuesday to advance to the qualifying round of 16 at the 2005 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.
The 50th-ranked Prousis started out the day by taking on No. 47 Ekaterina Burduli of Washington State in the first round of qualifying. Prousis rolled over Bruduli in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
Prousis was back in action Tuesday afternoon against No. 72 Alex McGoodwin of UCLA. Prousis made even shorter work of McGoodwin, winning in straight sets for the second time on the day, 6-2, 6-2.
Prousis will start Wednesday by going up against Notre Dame's Christian Thompson.
Freshman Georgia Rose (Mettawa, Ill./North Shore Country Day) dropped her match in the first round of qualifying. Rose won the first game against USC's Amanda Fink, but couldn't hold the momentum and dropped the second. Rose was edged by Fink in the third and fell to Fink, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles action, Prousis and Rose took on Alabama's 21st-ranked team of Ashley Bentley and Robin Stephenson. Prousis and Rose fell to Bentley and Stephenson, 8-4.
No. 11 Cristelle Grier (Epsom, England/Putney) has already been selected to play in the tournament's main draw, which starts Thursday, Oct. 6.
