EVANSTON, Ill. -- Despite heavy rain and wind gusts, Northwestern's men's soccer team blanked Illinois-Chicago 2-0 Wednesday evening. John Carlstedt (Indianapolis, Ind./Brebeuf Jesuit) and Brad North (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) each had a goal within the opening 15 minutes -- all Northwestern would need to improve its record to 5-3.

With heavy rains beginning nearly an hour before the match began, field conditions at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex were not ideal. The Wildcats did not miss a beat, however, dominating UIC offensively early in the game.

Northwestern's first goal came at the 12:07 mark. Alexander Renzi (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) played a beautiful ball to Tyler Voigt (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South). Voigt then found an open Carlstedt who knocked it home for his first goal of the season.

The 'Cats struck again only a little under three minutes later. This time Carlstedt found sophomore David Roth (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade College Prep) who dished to North in front of the Flames' goal. North finished by sending a shot past the left side of the UIC keeper to give Northwestern a 2-0 cushion.

Defensively, the Wildcats kept UIC off balance the entire match. Northwestern held UIC to two shots-on-goal, both of which were saved by NU goalkeeper Will Briley (Longview, Texas/Longview). Briley notched his first career shutout in the win.

For the match, Northwestern had seven shots-on-goal, 10 total shots. The Wildcats improve to 5-3 on the season, and resume Big Ten play at home against Michigan State at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2.
