LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Northwestern scored the first four goals of the match and never let Bucknell challenge Sunday morning in Lewisburg, Pa., cruising to a 4-1 victory over the Bison.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 6-3 on the season. Bucknell falls to 3-6 with the loss.
Northwestern opened up a 3-0 lead by halftime, and extended that to four goals just five minutes into the second stanza.
Freshman Jill Putnam (Greenfield, Mass./Greenfield) gave the Wildcats their first goal just 1:26 into the match when she put home a penalty corner on assists from Alexandra Quinn (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) and Christina Foley (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth).
Senior Holly Palin (Mequon, Wis./University School of Milwaukee) was the next to score, giving NU a 2-0 lead at 23:20 on an assist from Noreen Stewart (Farmington, Conn./Farmington).
Sophomore Cassie Miller (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) extended the cushion to 3-0 just five minutes later on an unassisted score.
Dominating the game offensively, Northwestern outshot the Bison 14-4 in the first half and held a 7-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Palin continued to apply the pressure to Bucknell with her second goal of the match at the 40:25 mark to push NU's lead to four, 4-0. Junior Meghan Small (Bethlehem, Pa./Moravian Academy) earned the assist on the penalty corner goal.
The Bison would break through against NU goalkeeper Sherri-Anne Nyberg (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna Secondary) at the 48 minute mark, but Nyberg and the NU defense did not allow Bucknell to get any closer.
NU ended up with a 24-11 advantage in shots and a 12-5 lead in penalty corners.
Nyberg finished the match with five saves.
Northwestern returns to action at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, when it hosts Big Ten foe Ohio State at the Leonard B. Thomas Sports Complex.
