DeKalb, Ill. -- Northwestern's men's soccer team improved its record to 3-2 on the year after winning its first match of the NIU Adidas/Baymont Inn Invitational against Northern Illinois on Friday, Sept. 16. Junior Brad North (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) scored the match winner for the 'Cats at 61:12.
Neither team could muster much offense on the first half, with both recording four shots. The teams went into the break locked in a scoreless tie.
In the second half, Northwestern kept plugging away at the Huskies and played sound defensive soccer. Northwestern's defense, particularly freshman goalkeeper Misha Rosenthal (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep), stood strong throughout the entire contest. While NIU outshot the Wildcats 11-8 for the match, Rosenthal recorded a career-high seven saves, and notched his second career shutout in the win.
Northwestern was able to break the 0-0 tie nearly 60 minutes into the match. Then, Northwestern's single-season assists record holder David Roth (St. Louis, Mo. Chaminade College Prep), did what he does best and set up North for the score. North tallied his third goal of the season, his second match winner.
Northwestern will take on IUPUI in the second half of the NIU Adidas/Baymont Inn Invitational at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18.
